Louise Ratliff
Social Sciences and Map Catalog Librarian
UCLA

How many years have you been in the profession?
45
Why did you become a librarian?
My BA is in French, and I didn’t want to teach French. Since I had worked in my school libraries every year since the 4th grade, it made sense to study library science!
Union role
Vice-President, UC-AFT Local 1990 and UCLA Campus Statewide Bargaining Team member
Why is it important to be active in our union?
Without representation and activism, we would be marginalized by the corporate academic institutions where we work. Being a member supports staffing and legal advocacy for all of us in the bargaining unit. Being active ensures that UC recognizes the work that we do for our communities, and compensates us adequately. (Adequate does not mean ideal, but it’s better than we would have without a contact.)
How are you contributing to this round of bargaining?
  • I’m on the Statewide Bargaining Committee
  • I’m organizing & agitating on my local campus
What aspects of working conditions do you want to see improve for your fellow librarians?
Better salaries, especially for early-career librarians, on a par with our colleagues in the California State University System. A fair distribution of professional development funds based on a per capita amount, not a per-campus allocation. Academic freedom!
When you’re not fighting for the rights of Unit 17 members, what do you do to unwind?
I garden with native California plants, do genealogical research on my family, listen to classical music and read novels.
What book are you reading right now?
I just finished a book entitled Latitude, about the amazing “race” across Europe to find the means of accurately measuring longitude before the invention of sea-going timepieces. Fascinating!

What is your favorite movie?

Pan’s Labyrinth

Do you have a favorite sports team?
The L.A. Dodgers, of course!
Tell us something most people wouldn’t know or guess about you.
In the 1970s and 1980s my (first) husband and I raced small sedans on racetracks such as Riverside International Raceway (now a shopping mall), Ontario Motor Speedway, road course (ditto, a mall), Willow Springs Raceway and Laguna Seca Raceway (old configuration). I was good too! What a blast! Yes, I miss it, but it’s way too expensive now. I also slalomed and was women’s champion for several years. What a blast!!
